The Wharekaho Tour is an approx 2 to 2 and a half hour guided tour of Ngāti Hei tribal lands and our Wharetaewa pā (village) site based at beautiful Wharekaho Beach, Whitianga.
This beach was Captain Cook's landing site and location of the first friendly encounter with local Māori and European peoples in 1769. You will be guided by tangata whenua (people of the land) who will share with you the history and stories of the local Ngāti Hei tribe, and explore the landscape and culture. Gain first hand insights into the lives and lifestyles of the Māori ancestors who occupied this unique coastal pā and rohe (tribal area) and gain understanding of how they existed here. Some people have shown interest in other sites of significance in the area and we can incorporate this into this tour also.
When available this tour will include afternoon or morning tea at one of our Kuia's homes consisting of food and or drink of a traditional flavour.
